Terms of Service

Last updated: September 30, 2026

These terms cover your use of Timbre, the daily word game at timbre.today, made by Alex Salwitz. By playing, you agree to them. They're kept short on purpose — this is a small hobby project, not a commercial service with a legal team, so treat this as a plain-language agreement rather than a dense contract.

What Timbre is

Timbre is a free, single-player daily word-guessing game. A new target word is selected each day; you guess words and see how closely they sound like the target. There's no payment, no subscription, and no in-game purchases.

Who can play

Timbre isn't directed at children under 13, and signing in with Google requires having a Google account in good standing under Google's own terms. If you're under 13, please don't sign in with Google or submit any personal information.

Your account (if you sign in)

Signing in with Google is optional and only used to sync your streak and stats across devices — see the Privacy Policy for exactly what's stored. You're responsible for keeping access to your own Google account secure; we have no separate password or account system of our own.

Playing fair

Please don't:

Since this is a free hobby project with no monitoring staff, enforcement here is informal — but we reserve the right to block access for clearly abusive use.

The service as-is

Timbre is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee it will always be available, bug-free, or uninterrupted — it's maintained by one person in their spare time. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of (or inability to use) the game, including loss of streak/stats data.

Content and word list

The daily word is drawn from a curated list of common English words. Game design, scoring logic, branding, and the Timbre name/logo belong to the developer. You're welcome to share scores and results (e.g., the "Share Results" output) publicly.

Third-party services

Timbre relies on a few outside services to work — Google for optional sign-in, the Datamuse API for word validation, and Google Fonts for typography. Your use of those features is also subject to those providers' own terms.

Changes

The game, these terms, and the Privacy Policy may change over time as the project evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date on this page. Continuing to play after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Termination

You can stop using Timbre, and unlink your Google account, at any time — there's nothing to formally "cancel." If you'd like data associated with your Google account deleted, see the Privacy Policy for how to request that.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
